Identify plants, animals and fungi from a photo

No photos yet

Take or choose up to 3 photos of the plant or animal you want to identify.

Use photo locationFavours species recorded near where the photo was taken. Only an area about 100 km across is sent, and it is not stored.

Identification isn’t available right now

This app can identify species on your own device, or through our service when your device can’t. At the moment neither is available, so there’s nothing we can do with your photos yet.

Your photos haven’t gone anywhere — they’re still here, and they’ll still be here when you try again.

A different network usually fixes it. If you’re offline, this will start working again once you reconnect.

One quick check

How it works

What it identifies

50,000 species of plants, animals and fungi, from the wild to the garden. Take or choose up to three photos of the same organism. When no single species is certain it names the genus, and when nothing matches it says so rather than guess.

What a result shows

The scientific name and, where there is one, the English name; how confident the match is; the taxonomy from kingdom to genus; a reference photo; a short summary from Wikipedia; and the species it is most easily confused with, with a warning when a species is known to be toxic, poisonous or venomous.

Free and private

No account, no cookies and no ads. Your photos are identified and then discarded: never stored, never shared, and never used to train anything.

Not a safety tool

Identifications can be wrong, sometimes confidently. Never eat, touch or handle a plant, mushroom or animal on the strength of a result; ask someone qualified.
